The Certificate in Global Studies is designed to cultivate knowledge, skills, and practical experience related to the global landscape. This program encompasses understanding contemporary global issues and processes, developing essential skills such as critical thinking, inter-cultural competency and problem-solving for a global and multicultural context, and exploring diverse perspectives to engage actively as global citizens.
This certificate is open to both degree-seeking and . It is particularly well-suited for students from all majors and disciplines who seek to gain a broader global perspective. Participants will deepen their understanding of various cultures, societies, and the significant trends and issues impacting global communities.
To earn the certificate, students must complete at least four courses at UNC Asheville with a minimum of 16 semester hours. All students are required to take the cornerstone course, GS 201, and three additional courses as specified below. With the coordinator’s approval, students may substitute other courses to fulfill the certificate’s requirements. Students are responsible for completing necessary prerequisites for all courses or for obtaining a waiver from the instructor.
For degree-seeking students, the combination of courses must comply with the guidelines for all interdisciplinary certificates – Courses must represent at least two different disciplines (as determined by course prefix) from two different departments. No more than eight of the required 12 semester hours that a student applies toward an interdisciplinary certificate may have the same course prefix. No more than 8 hours from a declared major or minor may be applied toward an interdisciplinary certificate. At least 3 of the 12 hours must be at the 300-400 level. All courses used for the certificate must be completed at UNC Asheville. Interdisciplinary certificates may only be completed in conjunction with the completion of an undergraduate degree at UNC Asheville.
Declaration of Interdisciplinary Certificate in Global Studies
Students must complete an Interdisciplinary Certificate Declaration form that is signed by the certificate coordinator and submitted to the Office of the Registrar in the Academic Success Center. Students are subject to the requirements in effect at the time they formally declare the certificate. The certificate must be officially declared before the deadline for applying for graduation.
