Interdisciplinary Studies: Concentration in Global Studies

The Global Studies concentration provides students an opportunity to explore global processes, trends and challenges through an interdisciplinary lens. The interdisciplinary approach is designed to provide students with a broad set of ideas and skills to analyze and respond to the diverse and complex mix of cultural, economic, and political forces that shape the global community. The major provides a strong foundation in intercultural skills and global citizenship. Students can draw on knowledge from a number of different disciplinary backgrounds to tailor their program of study to their individual interests, needs, and goals.

Requirements for Concentration in Global Studies


I. Required Courses for the major —at least 31 hours, including:


At least 20 hours of global studies related coursework chosen from the following courses:


Twelve hours must be at 300-400 level, and the courses must be from 3 different disciplines. Courses cross-listed between two departments (i.e. ASIA 320 and GS 320) are considered to be a single discipline.

II. International Experience:


Students must select a minimum of 3 hours from one of the following options:

A. Complete a UNC Asheville-approved Study Abroad experience


The courses must have a global studies focus and be approved by the department chair.

    or

B. Complete GS 365, Global Experiential Learning Project


III. Major competency:


Major competency is demonstrated in GS 461 or GS 494.
