SPAN 446 - Cultural Expression from Indigenous Latin America / Abya-Yala (4)

This course concentrates on classical and contemporary expressions from indigenous Latin America, referred to by many native writers, activists, artists, and elders as Abya-Yala, or “mature Mother Earth.” We draw upon film, documentary, poetry, literature, visual, ceramic, and textile art, and oral literature to consider prevalent themes such as connection to land, impacts of colonialism, community and resilience, ancestral wisdom, and worldview. Materials have been selected to provide an overview from Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, the Andes, and the Amazon. See department chair.
