LL 221 - Comparative Democracies (4) What principles and aspects of governance are considered when determining a “democracy score” today, and how have concepts of democracy/democratization evolved in different parts of the world? This course explores these questions through the study of foundational political and philosophical ideas in several contexts of nation-building and/or democratic development from the 1700s to the present. Explorations are deepened with the analysis of the cultural production (visual arts, literatures, performance) in these various contexts. This course fulfills the Foundations of American Democracy requirement of the Core Curriculum. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Every year.
