HUM 150 - What Is the Good Life? (4) What defines human nature, and how do we know it? What is the relationship between human and divine? How are ideas of self and society delineated? How should humans behave? How is the natural world understood? What is the good life? This course explores the worldviews of several civilizations that flourished from antiquity to the early modern era. In order to immerse ourselves in the ideas and values of the premodern time period, we will be focusing on key figures and texts from world literature, history, philosophy, religion, and the arts. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of primary sources in their cultural and historical context, and on critical engagement with multiple ancient perspectives in relation to contemporary issues.Yearly.
