Environmental Studies: Concentration in Ecology and Environmental Biology

Environmental Studies majors must fulfill the following requirements:

I. Required courses in the major—16 hours:

One course from:

ENVR 234 - Energy and Society (3)
ENVR 282 - Environmental Geology (3)
ENVR 334 - Environmental Policy (3)
Note: ENVR 334 is required for students completing the Environmental Management and Policy concentration.

II. Required courses outside the major—12-16 hours:

CHEM 111 - General Chemistry Laboratory (1)
CHEM 132 - General Chemistry (3)
CHEM 145 - Quantitative Chemistry Laboratory (1)
MATH 167 - Precalculus (4)
STAT 185 - Introductory Statistics (4)
Note: MATH 191 may be taken in lieu of both MATH 167 and STAT 185.

Either

CHEM 231 - Organic Chemistry I (3) or
CHEM 233 - Foundations of Inorganic Chemistry (General Chemistry II) (3)
Note: CHEM 233 is required for students completing the Earth Science concentration.

III. Special departmental requirements—28–31 hours, depending on concentration:

Completion of the concentration outlined below. Major competency is satisfied in ENVR 330 and 490. These courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

Concentration in Ecology and Environmental Biology—at least 28 hours distributed as follows:

Either:

BIOL 210 - Principles of Zoology (4) or
BIOL 211 - Principles of Botany (4)

One course from:

ATMS 103 - Introduction to Meteorology (3)
ENVR 105 - Physical Geology (4)
ENVR 106 - Earth History (3)
ENVR 338 - Principles of Hydrology and Hydrogeology (4)
ENVR 362 - Water Chemistry (4)
ENVR 385 - Soils (4)
CHEM 231 - Organic Chemistry I (3) (if not selected to fulfill the departmental chemistry requirement)
PHYS 131 - Introductory Physics I (4)

One 3-4 hour advanced ENVR elective

18 hours of Ecology and Biology electives chosen from:

Either (whichever is not selected above):

BIOL 210 - Principles of Zoology (4) or
BIOL 211 - Principles of Botany (4)

Note(s):

The 18 hours must include at least three 4-credit courses; and at least 11 of the 18 hours must be taken in ENVR.
