Classics: Concentration in Classical Studies

This program is recommended for those students who have interest in the general culture of the ancient world and do not necessarily desire a high level of proficiency in Latin or Greek, or for those who simply wish to broaden their education. This concentration is not recommended for students who wish to go to graduate school in Classics or Archaeology.

I. Required courses in the major—37 hours, including:


6 hours from Greek and/or Latin language courses at the 200-400 level


12 additional hours from 300-400 level CLAS courses


ANTH 225, PHIL 250 or 255 may be substituted for one of the courses in the12 additional hours. Other elective courses may also be substituted with prior approval of department chair.

II. Required courses outside major—None


IV. Other departmental requirements:


Major and oral competency will be demonstrated by a final examination consisting of one hour of written translation in Latin or Greek, one hour on a prepared essay topic, two hours on unprepared essay topics, a one-hour oral examination on literature, history and culture based on student readings over the course of study. Formal presentation of research conducted in CLAS 498 will be part of the demonstration of competency. Writing and Information Literacy competencies will be demonstrated in CLAS 498.
