Political parties play an important but ambiguous role in the US political system. In this class, we discuss why political parties emerge, why the US has a two party system, and how parties seek to accomplish their goals. We will also focus on the heightened partisanship that appears to have marked Congress and the electorate in recent years and what, if any, consequences that may have for the operation of our government.
